morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for brent. garvin thomas will be joining us from san bruno throughout the morning. >> right now we want to fill you in on the latest details about the san bruno explosion. as of this moment, one person is confirmed dead. and more than 20 people are injured. the explosion and fire destroyed 53 homes, damaged at least another 120. >> safety crews will get together in about an hour. they will survey the damage and decide when it's time to start to search for survivors, for more dead. we have at least one confirmed death, search and rescue operations could begin any time. >> if this is the first time you're hearing about what happened, here's the details. the initial explosion actually happened just after 6:00 last night near glenn view park in san bruno. witnesses say flames shot 200 feet to 300 feet in the air. winds fueled those flames. they jumped from house to house to house in the neighborhood. >> we have new information coming from the fire chief in the area that is now six people have died in this fire. so it has gone from one c

with us. i'm erica hill. >> i'm harry smith. a busy news day. >> it is. straight to our breaking news this morning, out of northern california. a giant fireball there last night just around dinner time, dozens of homes destroyed after a huge explosion last night. it was apparently caused by a broken gas line that happened in a san francisco suburb, very close to san francisco international airport. priya david clemens has the latest. priya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we're right at the edge of where the fire stopped. look at the devastation behind me. you'll see burned out cars, the firefighters still working to make sure all the smoldering flames are out completely. we're seeing little pockets of flames still pop up here and there. see this home has been completely flattened. this is a scene that has been repeated dozens of times throughout this neighborhood. parts of san bruno, california, were turned into a raging inferno around dinner time thursday evening. flames roared some 60 feet into the air as block after block in this residential neighborhood, about fiv

bruno, bracket. >> thank you. >> simon perez joins from us bayhill shopping center a major gathering spot for the evacuees. >> reporter: good morning. you can see behind me the red cross truck is here. they are certainly helping many of those people who had their homes either completely burned to the ground or had a lot of damage done to it. you can see some of the video there. dozens of homes that burned and more that are damaged. one person confirmed dead and dozens hurt. many people taking themselves to the hospital. some with severe burns, others with smoke inhalation, some in nearby hospital, others as far as san francisco. saint francis burn unit was treating some of the people last night. this is going to be a pretty difficult search operation, certainly not rescue but a search operation as cadaver dogs go through some of the rubble this morning. mainly, that's because many of the people if there are any left inside pretty much would have been incinerated. this fire was so hot, i was here last night that it just eliminated the houses almost instantly. you see skeletons, chimne

. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. here's the latest so far. one person is confirmed dead, that's confirmed. firefighters fear six might have been killed in san bruno. >> at latest count the fire destroyed 53 homes. 120 damaged, at least, and many continue to smolder more than ten hours after the fire broke out. containment? firefighters say the fire is 50% contained. pg&e is blaming the fire on a ruptured gas main. a state of emergency has been declared and aid has begun pouring in from around the bay and up and down california. take a live look from the air as the sun begins to rise in the east. this is the damage you can see. the highlighted areas there being lit up. yesterday people lived in these homes. today there is only rubble. >> team coverage begins now with terry mcsweeney near ground zero. terry the declaration you had to move. where are younow? >> we've been half a block away from where we were earlier. the pacifica police one of the law enforcement agencies involved, had us move up half a block.

houses for any casualties. there using search dogs to do this. earlier this morning at a news conference the indicated that they were only able to check 75% of homes the of their 25% of the homes were too hot to enter. if were expecting a news conference coming up at 5:00 today and we will find out whether not those homes have cooled off all and is in fact they've been able to make it into those other 25 percent homes. one other no will last talked you have asked us if there were any natural gas bills in the transmission line. we check back with pg&e they said no and the so that as of 9:00 this morning all the gas had dissipated. once it could stop the transmission line of both sides the flow of the distribution line there's still some residual gas and the blind they said essentially that all burned off. at one point was all gone i don't have the time for that but at least as of 9:00 a.m. this morning all of that was gone. we're waiting to news conference single which will be taking place down there at 430 from the ntsb and they're going to be looking into the cause of this fire. they're
